About Us….

Costa Maya / Mahahual & our Story

Mahahual is a small fishing village of about 900 inhabitants in the state of Quintana Roo and is the heart of Costa Maya, the newest tourist destination in Mexico and the jewel of the Mexican Western Caribbean. The Costa Maya region begins about 140 miles south of Cancun and stretches from the vast Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve almost to the Belize border. It encompasses huge swaths of protected jungle, a number of lesser-known Mayan archaeological sites, indigenous villages, pristine lagoons and top-notch diving on the second largest barrier reef in the world.

Puerto Costa Maya is now the second most popular cruise destination in Mexico. When cruise ships arrive the tranquil fishing village comes alive. However Mahahual village retains its quiet charm and remains one of the most relaxing and enjoyable beach destinations in all the Western Caribbean. Mahahual is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System that extends from the southern half of the Yucatan Peninsula to the Bay Islands of Honduras. It is the second longest barrier reef in the world and unique in the Western Hemisphere because of its length, composition of reef types, and diversity of corals and related species. With the recent completion of the Port expansion project, as of 2018 they are now able to accommodate 4 cruise ships at a time

The rapid growth of the Costa Maya stopped in August 2007 when Mahahual suffered a direct hit from Hurricane Dean, (a Category 5 storm). The hurricane severely damaged the cruise terminal and devastated many tourist facilities. By June 2008, after a lot of work from both the local people and officials of the port, Mahahual again welcomed cruise ship passengers.

Mahahual has a boardwalk (aka – the Malecon) that extends over 3 km beside the beach. Offering many relaxing walks among white sand beaches with shops, bars and restaurants, all without having to worry about cars. Mahahual has many great, reef friendly water activities including stand up paddle boarding, snorkeling, diving, and kayaks.

Team UnderToe

Curt and Julie Devoir of the Pacific Northwest purchased and took over the day to day operations of UnderToe Mexico in January 2015. Both water lovers with a passion for stand up paddle, sailing, and diving. Their goal is to introduce exciting new tours and excursions while expanding the UnderToe Mexico lesson program. Bringing a solid commitment to all clients of Puerto Costa Maya to make their SUP day on the water a safe and wonderful experience.

Julie learned how to swim before she could even walk! Growing up, she and her family spent many winters frolicking on the beaches of Hawaii. Julie considers herself part fish! Julie is a PSUPA instructor (Professional Standup Paddleboard Association) certified by Rob Casey. She is also experienced with SUP racing, SUP Surfing, long distance and downwind runs on the Pacific waters of the northwest and Hawaii. She earned her yoga instructors certification to enhance enable her to share the SUP Yoga experience.

Curt, grew up in Washington state and was the youngest of six children. He joined the military after high school graduation to explore the world. While Curt was a Marine he met, fell in love with and married Julie. They spent the next several years living exploring exciting new places. While stationed in Hawaii he became a PADI Certified Divemaster.

Julie and Curt had discovered sailing while on vacation in the British Virgin Islands. They spent a great deal of their free time sailing the waters of the Pacific NorthWest with their two children. During one of their sailing excursion they discovered and fell in love with Standup Paddle Boarding. Their desire to share this sport with friends and family led them to starting their own SUP business. Living in a small coastal town in Washington, allowed them to take adventurous paddle boarders on remote excursions, but the seasons were short and the waters were cold.

Their combined love for the water and wanting to live once again in a tropical environment led them to create a plan to get to the South Pacific or the Caribbean. While enjoying a glass of wine on a cool winter evening in front of a glowing fire. Julie noticed a news release announcing an opportunity in Mexico, to buy a successful stand up paddle board business. Their five year plan quickly became a six week plan.

In the past 4+ years, UnderToe Mexico has introduced several new services including: SUP Yoga sessions, advanced out of the area SUP excursions, 4km Downwind paddle excursions, different board styles to accommodate various conditions and skill levels and Aerial Photography (Drones).

*** New for 2019 *** We have recently taken on the role of Directors for the Professional Stand Up Paddle Association  (PSUPA.COM).  In this new capacity, we have rolled out a brand new certification (Fundamentals 1) which can be taught in around 4 hours and was designed for Rental Shops, Tour Guides, Camps and Resorts
